The Downtown Petoskey Farmer’s Market will be every Friday from May 24th to Sept 27th, from 8:30 am – 1 pm. Here you can find seasonal locally grown produce, locally raised meats, caught fish, fresh cut flowers, plants, foraged mushrooms, from-scratch baked goods, sauces, and more! Three new art exhibitions will open at Crooked Tree Arts Center – Petoskey. Please join us for complimentary appetizers and a cash bar as we celebrate the work of 56 artists, on display in both our Gilbert and Bonfield Galleries, as well as our annual Crooked Tree Photographic Society Exhibition in the Atrium Gallery.

Identity Maps: Juried Photography Exhibition (Bonfield Gallery)

Identity Maps: Juried Photography Exhibition features 48 photo-based works that explore dynamic interplays between identity, community, and place, selected by the juror, Amy Sacka. The 26 artists explored the theme through a variety of approaches, including digital, analog, mixed media, and cyanotype photography. 

The juror, Amy Sacka is an award-winning documentary photographer and writer based in Detroit, Michigan. Her work celebrates the culture and environment of Detroit and the Great Lakes at large. Amy’s work unearths important insights into Midwestern identity and the meaning of home.

The poet Elizabeth Brewster wrote: “People are made of places”, and as we know, places are also transformed and inflected by people. Photo-based art has engaged with this theme since the 19th century. 

The 77th Annual Michigan Water Color Society Exhibition (Gilbert Gallery)

The 77th Annual Michigan Water Color Society Exhibition features the 30 works selected for recognition by the juror, Stan Kurth, from 193 submissions by 105 artists. Stan is an award winning artist and instructor, best known for his intuitive approach to painting. 

The Michigan Water Color Society hosts annual juried exhibitions around Michigan. Their mission is to promote awareness of water media in contemporary art, and to support and encourage watercolor education and professionalism. They aim to be a forum for diverse perspectives.

The Annual Crooked Tree Photographic Society Exhibition (Atrium Gallery)

This annual exhibition features recent work by members of the Crooked Tree Photographic Society. The photographs included in this show were self-selected by the group through peer review. Intricate details from nature, evocative scenes and moments, and creatively constructed compositions work together in this intriguing and inspiring exhibition.

Join the Bay View Association at Voorhies Hall for Monday Night Movies.  The Book Thief is a 2013 war drama film directed by Brian Percival and starring Geoffrey Rush, Emily Watson, and Sophie Nélisse. The film is based on the 2005 novel of the same name by Markus Zusak and adapted by Michael Petroni. The film is about a young girl living with her adoptive German family during the Nazi era. Taught to read by her kind-hearted foster father, the girl begins “borrowing” books and sharing them with the Jewish refugee being sheltered by her foster parents in their home. The film features a musical score by Oscar-winning composer John Williams.

Pianist Kasey Shao performs at Great Lakes Center for the Arts on September 29th from 4 PM – 5 PM. A Steinway Young Artist and 2021 U.S. Presidential Scholar, Ms. Shao studies with Dr. Ran Dank and Magaret Kampmeier at Princeton University (class of 2025) concentrating in music with a focus on composition on the pre-medical track. She is the founder and president of the Princeton University chapter of Doctors Without Borders, an Academic Learning Consultant, and the Music Director of the Princeton Pianists Ensemble. She hopes to become a hand surgeon, helping other musicians continue to do what they love.   

Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council invites the public to a special screening of the award-winning documentary The Fish Thief on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at The Lyric Theater in Harbor Springs. This event is free to attend, but space is limited, so participants are encouraged to register in advance at watershedcouncil.org.

The Fish Thief, narrated by Oscar-winning actor J.K. Simmons, is a compelling 90-minute documentary that delves into the mystery of vanishing fish populations in the Great Lakes. Set against the backdrop of the region’s rich cultural and economic history, the film exposes the devastating impact of the sea lamprey, one of the most destructive invasive species ever to infiltrate the Great Lakes. Through the lens of remarkable individuals—scientists, researchers, and communities affected by this invader—the film reveals a dramatic battle to save the largest freshwater ecosystem on Earth.

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion on sea lamprey and the broader implications of aquatic invasive species, featuring prominent experts:

Join us for one of our super fun Halloween Weekends on Saturday, October 5, or on Saturday, October 12! Park staff will be giving an award to the Best Decorated Campsite so campers are encouraged to spruce up their sites to get in the Halloween spirit! Trick-or-treating will take place from 5-7 p.m. with vehicle traffic restricted during that time through the campground. Emmet County Parks and Recreation staff will have free hot dogs, chips, and drinks near the campground office followed by a free Haunted Trail open 7:30-8:30 p.m. All activities are weather-permitting and the general public is welcome to come out and join in the fun!
