Petoskey Area is located at the northwest tip of Michigan Lower Peninsula along Lake Michigan coastline. The communities in the Petoskey Area aside from its namesake are: Harbor Springs, Alanson, Boyne City, Bay Harbor, Bay View, and Boyne Falls. These lake and riverside towns are what makes up the Petoskey Area of northern Michigan.

The Petoskey Area does not have a core form of public transportation as you might find in the ‘big cities’. We often recommend renting a car if you are not driving in from your home destination. Although we do have area cab and shuttle services

Commonly found on the shores of Lake Michigan and connected bodies of water in the Petoskey Area is the state ‘stone’ of Michigan, the Petoskey Stone. This stone that is actually a fossil has a history going back millions of years – find out more about these fossils HERE.

What you see today is not a lighthouse; it is referred to as a beacon. The Petoskey Pierhead Lighthouse stood in the early 1900s but was washed off the pier in 1924. Find more information about area lighthouses HERE.

  • There actually is free parking in some parking lots and side streets downtown. Although the Petoskey Area Visitors Bureau is not responsible for the Downtown Parking Authority this is a question we see often. The Petoskey Downtown office is responsible for the management of parking enforcement and payments.
  • Back to free parking, along many side streets out of the immediate downtown there are not meter enforced parking – although these may be taken up by residents (examples include: along E Mitchell from Division Street near Crooked Tree Art Center to Clinton St; Along Michigan Street east of Waukazoo Ave; State Street downtown) near the Perry Hotel there is a free parking lot at the corner of Lewis Street and Rose Street across from Quarry Park.

Pellston Regional Airport (PLN) is approximately 25 miles from the Petoskey Area, making it the closest airport. It is serviced by Delta and United Airlines with daily flights to and from Detroit and Chicago. Cherry Capital Airport (TVC) in Traverse City is approximately 70 miles from the Petoskey Area, with multiple flight carriers to many major metros. View transportation information here.
