Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council invites the public to a special screening of the award-winning documentary The Fish Thief on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at The Lyric Theater in Harbor Springs. This event is free to attend, but space is limited, so participants are encouraged to register in advance at watershedcouncil.org.
The Fish Thief, narrated by Oscar-winning actor J.K. Simmons, is a compelling 90-minute documentary that delves into the mystery of vanishing fish populations in the Great Lakes. Set against the backdrop of the region’s rich cultural and economic history, the film exposes the devastating impact of the sea lamprey, one of the most destructive invasive species ever to infiltrate the Great Lakes. Through the lens of remarkable individuals—scientists, researchers, and communities affected by this invader—the film reveals a dramatic battle to save the largest freshwater ecosystem on Earth.
The screening will be followed by a panel discussion on sea lamprey and the broader implications of aquatic invasive species, featuring prominent experts:
Lindsey Haskin – Filmmaker of The Fish Thief
Nick Johnson – Research Ecologist and Director, Hammond Bay Biological Station
Andrea Jaeger Miehls – Communications Associate, Great Lakes Fishery Commission
Douglas W. Craven – Director, Natural Resource Department, Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians (LTBB)
