Memorial-Day-3-300x225Memorial Weekend is quickly approaching – how do you plan on spending it? For some, it’s a long weekend out of town playing golf, a family picnic, maybe time to get the yard work done. Many consider the holiday the beginning of the summer season and pull out the flip flops and hit the beach.

Memorial Day, also called Decoration Day, is defined in the dictionary as:  the last Monday in May that is a national holiday in the U.S. honoring members of the armed forces who died in wars.

Memorial-Day1-224x300In Petoskey:  Memorial Day Services in Petoskey will begin at 8:45am with a ceremony at Greenwood Cemetery, followed by 9:00am ceremonies at the World War II and Korean War monuments and a 9:15am ceremony at World War monument.

A parade will begin at 10:00am by the 7-11, continue along Mitchell Street and end in Pennsylvania Park at the gazebo. After, there will be a memorial service that includes speeches, wreath placement, music, a salute, and Taps. A luncheon follows at the American Legion Hall.

In Harbor Springs: The day begins with a pancake breakfast at the American Legion from 7am – 9am, at which time a flag raising ceremony will take place.

The Memorial Day Parade will start at 10am on Main Street and proceed to Zorn Park.  Here there will be a service, music and gun salute.  Another short service will take place right after this at the Lakeview Cemetery.

In Boyne City: The Lost at Sea Remembrance will be included in the Cemetery Services Schedule as noted below.

Memorial-Day2-224x300Memorial Procession will leave the American Legion Hall at 11:45am.  The Color Guard and any Veterans who wish to join the Scouts will proceed directly from the Hall to the Memorial accompanied by a muffled drum cadence befitting the solemn occasion.

Before and after the Memorial Day Services and Remembrances, enjoy your time in the Petoskey Area. Take advantage of great golf, hiking, sidewalk sales at Bay Harbor, biking, a 5K run in Harbor Springs and the many things that you’re free to do.
