A celebrated annual tradition! The GLCO will celebrate the holiday season with the performance of Handel’s masterpiece “Messiah.” Join Great Lakes Center for the Arts on December 7 and 8 for a cherished holiday tradition as the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra presents “Messiah” with the GLCO Choir. Experience the enduring cultural impact of George Fredric Handel’s masterpiece, “Messiah,” believed to have been performed every year since its creation in 1741. Handel’s composition, completed in just 24 days, continues to captivate audiences with its timeless beauty and profound storytelling.
Handel’s “Messiah” is a musical journey that blends different national styles, from French Baroque to Italian opera and distinctly Germanic orchestration, creating a unique and eclectic experience. The instrumental preludes exude the opulence of the French court, while the vocal writing reflects Handel’s deep study of Italian opera. This oratorio, narratively rich and spiritually transcendent, draws from passages in the King James Bible and the Coverdale Psalter, making it a work of broad appeal.
In addition to “Messiah,” GLCO will present Gerald Finzi’s “In Terra Pax.” Finzi’s music, marked by personal tragedy and a love for the English countryside, offers a sense of peace and equanimity, even in the face of life’s challenges. Don’t miss this opportunity to immerse yourself in the beauty of these timeless compositions, and join us for a holiday concert that is both spiritually uplifting and artistically enriching. Save the date, and let the music of Handel and Finzi fill your heart with the joy of the season.

Event Details
This production of The Nutcracker is made possible by a generous donation made in loving memory of Lawrence F. Kaine and the Otto Putzer Family.
Celebrate the holiday season with the dancers of Crooked Tree Arts Center’s School of Ballet. This dynamic and beautiful show, with original choreography, has become a favorite annual tradition for our Northern Michigan community.
The Nutcracker was first performed in Saint Petersburg in 1892. The story begins on Christmas Eve at the home of the Stahlbaums. The family holds a lavish party in which young Clara receives the most wonderful gift of all – a wooden Nutcracker. Just as she is drifting off to sleep, she is startled awake, as she was certain she fell asleep with her Nutcracker. When the clock strikes midnight, the Mouse Queen and her mischievous mice frighten Clara as toy soldiers and her valiant Nutcracker come to her rescue. When the Mouse Queen attacks the Nutcracker, Clara takes off her slipper and throws it at the Mouse Queen, who is startled long enough for the Nutcracker to recover and win the battle. The battle leaves the Nutcracker injured, but Dr. Drosselmeyer fixes him once again, magically transforming him into a Prince. The Nutcracker Prince takes Clara on a journey through the Land of the Snow and to the Kingdom of the Sweets, where Clara meets and dances with the most beautiful characters she has ever met. It is all so perfect… but even the most beautiful dream must end. The next morning, Clara wakes up with her wooden Nutcracker beside her. Was it all a dream?
A portion of the proceeds benefit the CTAC Dance Scholarship Fund.

Event Details
Michigan Rattlers are a folk-rock band composed of Graham Young (guitar), Adam Reed (bass), Christian Wilder (piano), and Tony Audia (drums). Meeting as childhood friends, they began writing music and performing together in their hometown of Petoskey, Michigan.
Their self-titled Michigan Rattlers EP attracted reviews from No Depression, Bluegrass Situation, B3 Science, and Rolling Stone, who named the band one of their “Ten New Country Artists You Need To Know” in 2016. They’ve continued to evolve beyond the “country” label ever since.
In 2018, following a summer tour that included stops at Bonnaroo, Firefly and Electric Forest; the band released their debut full length album, ‘Evergreen’. “This is a band with solid songwriting chops and instrumental skills,” says No Depression. “‘Evergreen’ shows this four-piece from Petoskey, Michigan making a stand, making their way.”
Growing into a more expansive sound, the band’s second full length album, ‘That Kind of Life’, was released in 2021 to positive reviews.
With live shows being at the core of the band’s identity, the Rattlers continue to tour relentlessly, bringing their honest songwriting and high energy rock n roll to stages across the U.S and Canada.

Event Details
Join Crooked Tree Arts Center (CTAC) as they present Djangophonique on January 13th from 7:30 pm – 9 pm. With respect for the tradition and a fearless creativity that bends the conventions of the style, Djangophonique is keeping the Hot Club revival alive and well.
Djangophonique is a virtuosic, instrumentally driven quartet led by guitar player Andrew Brown. With over a decade of national touring experience, Brown is no stranger to the stage and delivers every performance with personality and enigmatic charm. A true disciple of the style, Brown has spent countless hours immersing himself in the language of Django Reinhardt’s jazz manouche, and he’s joined on stage by bandmates that match his skill and passion for the material. The result is a sound that’s unmistakable to fans of the music, and alluring to the uninitiated—a sound that can bring the lively energy of a parisian dance hall to the quietest listening room or captivate a buzzing festival audience with a shimmering ballad. The core group of Djangophonique includes Tyler Rindo on clarinet, Zach Croft on rhythm guitar, and Jorian Olk-Szost on upright bass. However Djangophonique often appears in different incarnations thanks to Brown’s ever growing network of collaborators within the jazz world. Djagophonique has been nominated for Detroit Music Awards including Outstanding T raditional Jazz Artist and Outstanding Jazz Recording (for their 2020 EP Jazz Du Jour.) Their first studio album “Introducing Djangophonique” is available on CD, Vinyl, and via Digital Download with a streaming release date of September 2022.

As fresh sounding as they are retro, the Gasoline Gypsies evoke the spirit of rock and roll as it was originally intended. It’s music that helps us all forget our cares, free our souls, and jam together. Their original songs feature unifying, foot-stomping anthems of life, that inspire their multi-generational audience to sing along. The music of the Gasoline Gypsies sounds like fine vintage southern rock, rolled around in the grand ol’ grit of the Motor City. It’s music that moves people and connects them, all at the same time.

Crooked Tree Arts Center (CTAC) Presents: Mr. B on February 10th from 7:30 PM – 9 PM. Blues and boogie-woogie pianist Mark Lincoln Braun has become one of the premiere purveyors of a vanishing art. Having learned his craft first-hand from the early masters, he is a rare living link to the first generation of blues and boogie pianists. Steeped in the rich legacy of this tremendously exciting music, Mr. B learned directly from blues and boogie legends like Little Brother Montgomery, Boogie Woogie Red, and Blind John Davis. In demand for both educational programs and concert performances, he has performed coast to coast and throughout Europe, Canada, Mexico, and South America. In 2002 he was a guest artist at the Irving S. Gilmore International Keyboard Festival. He is also the organizer of the annual Mr. B’s Blues and Boogie Piano Celebration that attracts major figures in the blues and jazz piano world to Ann Arbor for collaborative performances with Mr. B. Mark Lincoln Braun was born and raised in Flint, Michigan. He gravitated to Ann Arbor in the 70s where the Blind Pig was an important venue for boogie and blues piano. While absorbing the tradition and developing his own approach, Mr. B was also listening to a variety of jazz pianists, especially those with strong blues roots such as Ray Bryant and Horace Silver. This broad range of interests enables him to feel equally at home playing boogie-woogie classics with authentic fervor and expanding the tradition into lively new settings, including jazz orchestra. Today he further promotes his art and breaks down stylistic barriers by frequently collaborating with such world-renowned mainstream jazz pianists as Monty Alexander, Henry Butler, Benny Green, Ray Bryant, Sir Charles Thompson, and Junior Mance. He has appeared on numerous National Public Radio broadcasts, including “Mountain Stage,” “Good Evening,” “Our Front Porch,” “The Flea Market,” “At the Bride,” and “All Things Considered.”and once even on screen for an upcoming (undisclosed) Netflix series.

Event Details
Blackthorn welcomes you to the rich tapestry of Celtic music, live at Crooked Tree Art Center (CTAC) on March 16 from 7:30 PM – 9 PM.
Traditional songs of emigration, sea shanties, lively jigs and reels, and ancient airs combine with some of Irelands best contemporary songs for a musical experience that captures the history and legend of Ireland and its people.
What makes a Blackthorn show unique is the variety of tunes, tempos, and textures. Each member of the band plays multiple instruments, including a wooden flute, accordion, tin whistle, five-string banjo, cittern, bones, and more. These instruments complement the lead vocal of Belfast native Richard McMullan and the bands tight blend of four-part harmony.
Blackthorn has played throughout the Great Lakes region since 1984. Based in Detroit, they can be found regularly at OMaras Pub and Restaurant in Berkley. Other venues include concert halls, universities and festivals, including main stage appearances at the prestigious Michigan Irish Festival and the world-renowned Milwaukee Irish Fest.
Metro Detroiters fondly remember Blackthorns annual appearances on J. P. McCarthys St. Patricks Day show on WJR radio in the 1980s and 1990s, and later with Paul W. Smith. They have released seven CDs, and have performed with guest musicians such as members of the Michigan Opera Theater and the Motor City Brass Band. In 2010, Blackthorn was voted “Best Folk Band/Artist” by the readers of The Detroit Metro Times.
From large festivals to pubs, restaurants, or intimate performing arts centers, Blackthorn provides time-tested entertainment. Chuck Ward of the Milwaukee Irish Fest says this about the band, “Blackthorn was very well received at Milwaukee Irish Fest, they impressed everyone with their strong and well-blended songs. They are strong ambassadors in their commitment to continuing the Irish ballad tradition and a crowd-pleasing addition to any festival.”
Band members include Richard McMullan, Fred Klein, Gary McMullen, Dennis Green, and David Mosher.
