Join Mary Stewart Adams, Star Historian, at Three Pines Studio for an educational workshop about navigating the stars: What to Look for in the Summer Sky on Thursday, July 6th from 1 – 2:30 pm. From the three bright stars of the Summer Triangle that guide us on to the Milky Way, to the brilliant flashes of the Perseid Meteors, summertime offers some of the most gratifying stargazing of the year. In this session for young and old, we’ll make star maps, hear ancient tales, and learn how to find our way through the stars, and to our own star.

Join watercolorist/art teacher Megan Swoyer at Three Pines Studio as she leads you on a veritable summery, “lakeside journey” right here, outdoors, at the studio. You’ll paint quintessential Michigan — including dragonflies, wildflowers, and waterbirds. Students will paint A FEW different works and learn techniques that include wax resist, wet-into-wet, and petal shadowing. Megan’s easy-going teaching style ensures your painting time will be relaxing and rewarding. “You’ll feel like you’re sitting on an inland dock in northern Michigan (toes in water, of course) as your subjects come to life on paper,” Megan says. Pure Painterly! Space is limited; reserve your spot soon!
Learn more about Megan at www.greenbushmedia.com or follow her on Instagram @meganswoyer. If you have questions about anything class-related, email Megan at megan@waterloogroup.com.

Join Three Pines Studio for a book reading, activity, and book signing – ‘Who Am I?’ by Julie Buchholtz.
“Who am I?” a young girl asks her mom as she snuggles close. “ You are the fire that burns and the eagle that soars. You are the oak tree and the wild rose,” says Momma. Written from an indigenous perspective, Who Am I? tells the story of how we are all connected to our ancestors, our past and future, and the Earth–and how it is everyone’s duty to fend off the darkness, connect to the past, offer safety and shelter, and color the world with beauty. An Own Voices, Own Stories Grand Prize winner. All ages are welcome.

Event Details
Join Three Pines Studio for a two-day workshop with Heidi A. Marshall – Capturing the Poetic in Landscape Paintings.
This two-day workshop will stress the importance of expression in painting. Painters often feel frustrated that they can’t seem to create what they see in their mind’s eye. She calls this the “big Idea” concept. What is it you want this painting to say? That’s probably the most important question to consider. Here’s another one – what is the landscape saying to you?
You will explore various ways to enter a painting to get a feeling of what you want to achieve from the onset. There will be some process experimentation and various ways of looking inward as well as outward.
A soulful or poetic painting begins in the eye and heart— sensing something special and feeling its essence. With that said, we will also learn more about the parts of painting important in creating – namely, composition, value, edges, temperature, and more. These basics are also crucial to expression.
I will meet you at your level so don’t shy away if you are a beginner. There is something to learn at every level in this approach to painting.
This class includes demonstrations showcasing some interesting techniques. She will also stress the importance of inspiration, looking, journaling, and taking chances.
