Join Bay View Association for Inside the Box: An Evening of Puzzles and Magic. David Kwong is an expert in enigmas and illusions. He delights and challenges audiences around the world with his intellectual brand of magic. His one-man show The Enigmatist had a year-long run in New York, playing to sold-out crowds both there and in Los Angeles. His show Inside the Box garnered a Critic’s Pick from the New York Times.
Now, this Los Angeles-based “cruciverbalist” (Kwong has created crossword puzzles for the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and the Los Angeles Times) is bringing his unique blend of magic and wordplay to the Bay View Association’s Hall Auditorium on Saturday, July 8 from 8-9:30 p.m. The title of his performance is Inside the Box: An Evening of Puzzles and Magic.
A Harvard graduate, Kwong has conjured a career out of puzzles and magic—what he calls “the two nerdiest hobbies.” In addition to creating crossword puzzles and performing mind-bending stunts on stage, Kwong is also Hollywood’s go-to magician and puzzle creator. He has served as Secret-Code Advisor for NBC’s TV show Blindspot, and Lead Magic Consultant on the popular film series Now You See Me.

Bay View Association’s The Big Read guest speaker, Kinari Webb, M.D., author of Guardians of the Trees: A Journey of Hope Through Healing the Planet.
About Kinari Webb
American writer and environmentalist Bill McKibben called Kinari Webb’s Guardians of the Trees a “magnificent, empowering” memoir about a woman spearheading a global initiative to heal the world’s rainforests and the communities who depend on them.
Webb realized her true calling was at the intersection of medicine and conservation after traveling at age 21 to Indonesian Borneo to study orangutans. She was both awestruck by the beauty of her surroundings and heartbroken by the rainforest destruction she witnessed. As she got to know the local communities, she realized their need to pay for expensive healthcare led directly to the rampant logging, which in turn imperiled their health and safety even further.
When the Yale School of Medicine graduate returned to Borneo, she founded two non-profits, and worked with local rainforest communities and international teams to build a clinic, develop regenerative economies, provide educational opportunities, and dramatically transform the region. Just as everything was going right, Webb was stung by a deadly box jellyfish and would spend the next four years fighting for her life—a fight that would lead her to rethink everything.
